TriMark Legal Funding is one of America’s longest-standing pre-settlement loan providers. Since 2003, we’ve seen our fair share of really stupid people and the aftermath and fallout of their colossally stupid decisions.
WARNING: This is a RANT. If you or your delicate sensibilities get triggered or otherwise easily offended by the enthusiastic, inflammatory use of adjectives like “stupid,” “stupidity,” their derivatives, and similar terminology to articulate profound contempt for avoidably flawed human decision-making processes and the idiotic people who can’t seem to stop themselves from acting on them, you should leave right now. Seriously.
Pre-Settlement Loans For When Stupid Shows Up
Modern-day philosopher, shrimpin’ boat captain, and gozillionaire Forest Gump (and his mama) nailed it when they said, “Stupid Is As Stupid Does.” Translated, it means that you can reliably identify stupid people simply by observing the stupid things they do.
Injuries caused by stupidity, in our observation, almost always originate from the mind of a person filled with apathetic self-centeredness.
The “I’m going to do whatever I want to do, because I can” mindset seems to be the predominant mindset among stupid people.
And let’s be absolutely clear about something.
People who make stupid, reckless, self-centered decisions that needlessly endanger the lives or safety of other people or that result in the unnecessary and completely avoidable infliction of pain, injury, death, loss, and suffering onto innocent bystanders ARE, in fact, stupid.
“Wow, that’s a little harsh, isn’t it?”
Maybe. But that doesn’t make it any less true.
Choosing To Be Stupid
Sometimes, not often, but every once in a while, stupid people act on the impulse to make colossally bad decisions that, quite predictably, end up seriously injuring, maiming, killing, or otherwise harming themselves and other people.
Sometimes, a LOT of other people.
When a stupid person removes their own DNA from the collective human gene pool during the spectacular climax of a really stupid decision gone awry, we jokingly say that “evolution has run its course” and that they’re a contender for a Darwin Award.
When their stupidity injures or kills other people, however, well, that’s just inexcusable.
Read The Signs Dummy
Have you ever noticed that when a stupid person “makes their move,” they almost always break one or more rules or laws that exist precisely for the purpose of deterring idiotic people like them from even considering that choice in the first place?
The fact is, stupid people have been the driving force behind a whole bunch of really good rules and laws whose sole intent is to protect us from the tragic mental deficits of our fellow human beings. Specifically, those fellow humans who make the conscious choice to be stupid.
And make no mistake, stupidity is ALWAYS a choice.
Stupidity In Action
Now, we’re not talking about mere “bad luck,” “unforeseeable circumstance,” or the inevitable “wrong place, wrong time” types of injury lawsuits that TriMark Legal Funding sees on a daily basis.
No, we’re talking about a whole other level of selfish, reckless decision-making that’s far beyond the pale. These bad decisions spawn actions that should be, and in many cases already are, illegal, but stupid people choose to do it anyway.
Their stupidity defies logic, reason, common sense, and all of the universally accepted standards of conduct and behavior that all normal people abide by to ensure safe, ethical, and mutually equitable interactions with their fellow human beings.
They’re the kind of consequence-inducing decisions that cause normal, reasonable people to shake their heads in utter confusion after the fact and ask, “What the hell were they thinking?”
Stupidity on Rails
Metrolink commuter train engineer Robert Sanchez knew full well that he was violating his employer’s safety rules by even having a cell phone in his possession in the cab of the locomotive he was operating. His self-centered, “I only care about myself” attitude prompted his decision to ignore that rule. Distracted while texting a friend, he missed a stop signal, leading to a head-on collision with a Union Pacific freight train. The collision, which was caused 100% by Sanchez’s stupidity, killed Sanchez and 24 other people in Chatsworth, California, on September 12, 2008.
In addition to himself and the other 24 people he killed, Sanchez injured 135 people, completely destroyed 2 trains and their accompanying locomotives, and caused $10.6 million in damages. As if more proof was needed to prove Sanchez’s immutable stupidity, phone records show Sanchez was not only texting his teen friend just 22 seconds before the collision, but he also had made plans to allow the same teenage friend to actually operate the train!
Stupidity on Wheels
Here are some perfect examples of what we’re talking about:
Impaired Driving
Think about this. Every single person over the age of 15 with a driver’s license, bar none, is acutely aware that driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs is absolutely, positively, without exception, 100% illegal, 100% of the time. This is and has been, true in every single state in the United States for many decades. It’s common knowledge; EVERYONE knows this.
Then Stupid Came To The Party
And yet, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2022, 13,524 people were killed in crashes involving a stupid driver with an illegal blood alcohol content of .08 or greater.
In addition, about 1.5 million stupid people are arrested each year for driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. Put another way, roughly one in every 121 licensed drivers is stupid enough to knowingly drive a vehicle after they were beyond the legal limit.
Remember that those are only the people who were over the legal limit and got caught. There were likely millions or tens of millions, more who were over, at, or slightly under the limit but simply didn’t get caught or get in an accident.
What About Greed?
Unbridled greed, especially when wielded by corrupt, morally bankrupt individuals lacking even a shred of human decency, humanity, or the concept of ethical human behavior, has been the driving force behind a bevy of corporate decisions that, quite frankly, strain believability and have caused unfathomable human suffering and loss.
Yep, I’m talking directly to you Catholic Church, for decades of lying about and protecting all of your pedophile priests because you wanted to protect your wealth.
lso talking to the Boy Scouts of America, for knowingly concealing the fact that you’ve had child sexual predators in your ranks for more than 100 years.
And yes, also speaking directly to you Sackler family.
Really though, it’s not JUST you. The debacle of Purdue Pharma, Oxycontin, and the ensuing global opioid epidemic that it caused are just symptoms of an exponentially larger problem. The problem of corporations knowingly and wantonly victimizing and exploiting humanity and ruthlessly prioritizing profit over people.
But that’s a rant for another day.
