Latest Developments in Pedestrian Injury Law…

The driver of the pickup truck who fatally struck Shady Acres resident Ryan Lutz and his dog while they were jogging early April 5 admitted to speeding at the time and hit a parked car later that morning on the same street, according to Houston Police Department crash reports obtained by The Leader, which show the driver was suspected of being under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the second collision. The accident report for the first collision, which occurred at 6:05 a.m. in the 900 block of West 25th Street, shows the victim Lutz had a blood-alcohol level of 0.13, which is nearly two times the legal limit in Texas. Lutz, 35, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital after the crash and died from his injuries 10 days later, according to a news release from HPD…. Read more
Huntington Beach Police said a 25-year-old West Point graduate, who was home to see family, was critically injured on Beach Boulevard last week as he walked in traffic lanes in the early morning hours. His family said that story doesn't make sense. "They just said he was in a car accident. So, we get there, I assume maybe he has some scrapes and bruises, maybe broken bones," said Tammy Broadus. However, her brother Stephen Broadus was much worse off than that. Surgeons at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center did brain surgery on the 25-year-old on Easter to try and save his life, but he died over the weekend. "He fought for his life in the hospital for a week. He held on for … Read more

The 33-year-old pickup driver, who Chron is not identifying since he is not facing charges at this time, was eastbound in the 900 block of West 25th Street at 6:05 a.m. that Tuesday morning as 35-year-old Ryan Lutz walked his dog on the edge of the roadway, according to a crash report. That's when the driver of the black Chevrolet Silverado collided with Lutz from behind, throwing him nearly 90 feet and killing the pup. Lutz was rushed to the hospital and … Read more
The driver of a New York City Police Department van struck and killed a man standing in the center median of a Brooklyn thoroughfare Thursday night, the police said. The vehicle was traveling west on Eastern Parkway near Schenectady Avenue in Crown Heights just after 8 p.m. when it struck the 53-year-old man, the police said. He was rushed to Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead. The police did not identify the victim or the driver. Four people who were under arrest were being transported in the van to the 77th Precinct when the incident occurred. The department’s press office didn’t immediately provide more details about the collision. The man was killed amid a years-long effort to reduce the death… Read more
An Arnold man was declared dead Tuesday night after he was hit by a vehicle while walking on Ritchie Highway, according to police. Eric Crawford, 33, was struck by a 2012 Nissan Versa after 10 p.m. Tuesday, around the time Anne Arundel County Police were called to the 1200 block of Ritchie Highway for a complaint about a pedestrian walking in the northbound section of the roadway, according to a news release from the police department. He was declared dead at the scene, near Severna Park Golf Center. Police said Crawford was “wearing dark, non-reflective clothing,” and they believe pedestrian error led to him being struck by the car, which was operated by Christopher Broughton, 57 of Glen Burnie.
