An Upstate crash claimed the lives of two adults and a child Tuesday evening, according to Chief David Green, with Wellford Police Department.

The two-vehicle crash happened on U.S. Highway 29 at Tucapau Road in Wellford, SC Green said.

Green said the tragedy was absolutely avoidable.

“It was a senseless fatality that we believe is a result of speeding,” Green said.

Green said speeding along highway 29 has been on their radar for some time.

“We were in the stages of putting together a task force for traffic enforcement. This will speed up that timetable to be more visible on 29. To get people to slow down,” Green said.

“It was awful, it was awful to come upon and awful to know what families hurt by this,” resident Rebecca Martin.

Megan Jackson Barnett, 30, Briley Diann Barnett, 6, of Wellford and Jackolane Mattison, 43, of Lyman were killed in the crash, according to Coroner Rusty Clevenger with Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

Barnett was a teacher’s assistant at Wellford Academy of Science and Technology and her daughter Briley was a first-grade student, according to Melissa Robinette, with Spartanburg District Five Schools of Spartanburg County.

City council members Brian Jones and Wymond Wilkins were just some of the long-time residents that have seen this problem before.

“It’s gotten so bad that they call it a speed trap when the police stop a person when they are speeding. But we see it all the time, I see it first hand. I’ve ridden with them. I have seen it first hand,” Wilkins said.

“It’s very frustrating ….You’re not paying attention to your safety and the safety of others,” Jones said.

At the scene of the terrible crash, not only were there skid marks on the road, but a scar that will be with this community forever.

“Please slow down. Not only are you putting your life at risk but you’re putting others at risk. It’s better to get their late than not there at all,” Green said.

Green added, that following Tuesday’s incident they will be stepping up their enforcement on HWY 29 over the next several weeks.

Tuesday night, the school district released a statement.

“Our school district is heartbroken over the loss of these two precious members of our Wellford Academy and District Five family. As a district, we are offering all the support and resources the Wellford Academy family needs in the coming days and weeks, as they deal with this tragedy.

Additional counselors will be on campus tomorrow, and throughout the week, to provide support for any students and staff who need them. The district sends its deepest condolences to the Barnett family, and asks that the community keep them in their thoughts and prayers.”
