I need someone to explain this to me like I’m a 4 year old because seriously, I’m just not getting it.
In 2015, a 21 year old white supremacist walked into a church and, unprovoked, shot and killed 9 people. It was a singular and entirely random act that no one could have predicted. And what did we, as a country, do? We BANNED the confederate flag. Even though it is an inanimate object and took no part in the shooting whatsoever, we banned a piece of cloth.
But in 2016 alone, pitbulls, UNPROVOKED, killed 22 people; nearly 2 1/2 times the number of people killed in that random shooting. And our response? Silence and indifference.
And check this out; for the 12-year period from 2005 to 2016, pitbulls, unprovoked, killed 254 people. That’s an average of 22 people per year. For 12 years. In a row. Those numbers are both reliable AND predictable. And what did we ban? Nothing; not a damn thing.
Here’s a fun fact: On any given day, about 1,000 people are treated for serious dog bite injuries in the US and on average, 63% of those injuries are caused by pitbulls. That’s an average of 630 serious pitbull attacks on people EACH DAY. Multiply that by 365 days in a year and you get 230,000 predictable pitbull attacks on people (give or take) per year that are so serious that people had to seek medical attention.
So to recap, that means that from 2005-2016, 254 people were killed by pitbulls and approximately 2,760,000 others were bitten, mauled, maimed and/or disfigured by pitbulls. Since these figures have held steady for 12 years, they are both reliable AND predictable.
254 people dead and nearly 2.8 MILLION people, a large majority of them children, bitten, maimed, mauled and disfigured by pitbulls.
And the public outcry? There was none. Zero. Zip. Goose egg. Nada. Nothing.
Statistically speaking, in 2017 22 people will die and about 230,000 people will be injured by pitbulls and in 2018 it will happen all over again; reliably and 100% predictably.
Millions of lives irreparably altered or destroyed. Tens of billions of dollars in medical expenditures and tens of billions of dollars more in insurance settlements.
So what is the message we’re sending here?
1 guy kills 9 people in a completely random, isolated incident and we ban a 150 year old piece of cloth that had nothing to do with the killing, but one specific breed of dog consistently, reliably and predictably kills 22 people and attacks, mauls, maims and disfigures 230,000 others each year, almost all of them unprovoked and the vast majority of them children and yet we do nothing.
Will somebody PLEASE tell me why we haven’t banned pitbulls yet???
