Camden NJ Diocese settles abuse claims

The Diocese of Camden has made financial settlements to resolve claims of Catholic priest sexual abuse involving parish priests in the 1950s and 1960s, a lawyer said Monday.

The payments took place after two men alleged they were sexually assaulted in separate incidents when they were children, said attorney Mitchell Garabedian of Boston. He gave no details but said each settlement was “in five figures.”

A Boston attorney says the Diocese of Camden has settled a claim that a priest abused a boy at the former St. Maurice Church in Brooklawn.

One man, now in his 70s, alleged that the Rev. Joseph Brennan sexually abused him from 1957 to 1959 at the former St. Maurice Parish in Brooklawn, Garabedian said.

IVC Blood Clot Filter Injuries and Settlements

IVC filter lawsuits claim C.R. Bard and Cook Medical’s devices were defective, making them more likely to fracture or perforate the inferior vena cava. In March 2018, Bard was ordered to pay a woman $3.6 million to settle an IVC filter case. Bard and Cook have agreed to individual IVC filter lawsuit settlements for undisclosed amounts.

Essure Birth Control Lawsuit Settlement

In August 2020, Bayer announced it would pay $1.6 billion to end virtually all of the U.S. Essure lawsuits involving women who claimed the birth control device caused serious health complications. The Essure settlements will resolve about 90 percent of the nearly 39,000 claims. Bayer had stopped selling Essure in 2018 but did not recall the device.

Thousands of American women filed lawsuits against Bayer after they say Essure caused devastating side effects and ruined their lives. Lawsuits say Bayer failed to report serious side effects such as perforated organs and broken devices to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and to the public.

For many women, Essure side effects started immediately after implantation. In lawsuits, some say their devices moved out of the fallopian tubes and cut into nearby organs. Others say their device broke into pieces and wreaked havoc on their bodies.

Lawyers Accuse J&J and Bayer of Withholding Xarelto Study Data

Lawyers for patients suing Johnson & Johnson and Bayer over severe bleeding injuries caused by the blockbuster blood thinner Xarelto say the drug makers failed to provide clinical trial data, the New York Times reported.

Documents filed in court say a re-analysis conducted by Duke published by the New England Medical Journal of Medicine was missing key information that could have affected clinical trial data comparing Xarelto to warfarin in its 2011 ROCKET-AF study. J&J and Bayer stayed silent and helped deceive editors of the journal, lawyers said.

The trial in question compared the safety of Xarelto and warfarin. Specifically, it collected data on the number of strokes and bleeding events experienced by patients taking one drug or the other. According to the study results, both Xarelto and warfarin had the same risk of bleeding, but J&J and Bayer’s drug showed fewer incidents of bleeding in the brain and fatal bleeding.
